Indigenous Beach Culture Film Festival Showcases Afro, Caribbean And Latin People Surf In History And Today

Surfer, and, creator of the festival, Mimi Miller continues to be a catalyst for Black surfers across the globe with an ever-growing cohort of Black and Brown students that reveal two things: Black people surf too and showing them doing so has never been more important. The “Indigenous Beach Culture Film Festival” brings a much needed paradigm shift in how surfers are depicted. Almost always white men, ignoring its history in coastal countries across Africa and the Caribbean.

On October 24th 2020 (2pm – 9pm), co-hosts Mimi Miller and Destiny, have curated a day of films, guided dialogue, performances, and a chance to see live skaters, and art, happening in real-time. This outdoor event is affiliated with, and will be adjacent to, Hot and Cool Café in the historic Leimert Park — A Los Angeles cultural enclave that is salient with Black expression and Pan-Africanism that highlights the vastness of Black culture.

Expect free popcorn and all-natural craft ginger beer sponsored by REED’s. Additionally, live reggae music by Lamour & The Mystic Band will set the vibe for the day. Film categories will include documentary, action-cam, narrative and experimental shorts. Finally, as the festival aims to encourage everyone to connect with the culture of surfing, it’ll also share the history and honor surfers like Will Lamar, Nique Miller, Hunter Jones, Sharon Schaffer and Ronald “Superman Jr.” Hasting.
