Nearly a decade after a devastating wrong-way crash forever changed the life of Steven Edmondson, another chapter in his long journey toward justice has come to a close. Today, he continues to move forward with his life, supported by his loved ones and community.

Karen Pridgen Stafford was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on July 13, 2026, to begin serving her sentence of 2nd degree assault (a class C felony) – stemming from the 2017 crash that left Steven with catastrophic injuries.

While no amount of time or legal action can undo the trauma he has endured, this moment represents a measure of accountability after years of court proceedings, appeals, and perseverance.

The case began on June 22, 2017, when Stafford was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol – traveling the wrong way on U.S. Highway 31 (Route 31) in Homewood, Alabama – before colliding head-on with Steven’s vehicle. The head-on collision resulted in life-altering injuries for Steven, and marked the beginning of a years-long legal process for him and his family.
